Guidance on staying at home and away from others
The single most important action we can take in fighting COVID-19 is to stay at home, in order to protect the NHS and save lives.
When day to day contact with other people is reduced, so to is the spread of the infection. That is why the government has now introduced three new measures:
- Requiring people to stay at home, except for very limited purposes
- Closing non-essential shops and community spaces
- Stopping all gatherings of more than two people in public
Everyone must comply with these new measures and the relevant authorities, including the police, will be given the powers to enforce them. These new measures will include fines and dispersing gatherings.
The new measures are effective immediately, with the government looking at them again in three weeks and relaxing them if the evidence shows this is possible.
